Pokemon Trainer Red
Back in 2012, I decided to revamp Ken Sugimori's depiction of Red from Pokemon Red & Blue. This was a full 6 years before the release of Pokemon Let's GO: Pikachu & Eevee.
The original illustration of Red used washed out watercolors and he was barely 4 and a half heads tall. The newer art uses pastel colours, a unique cell-shading technique and more natural proportions.
When adapting older art to a newer style I analyse each element individually so that I can transpose them in a way that makes sense.
I like to colour pick from the original material to stay true to it. For shading and highlights, Ken Sugimori does a very particular style of cell-shading where the layers are duplicated and feathered to form a midtone that separates them from base colour.
